                      Winter Weather Outlook,2008-2009

Wow! First we started the summer on a active note, from widespread record severe weather outbreaks and catastrophic flooding..then things calmed down as we ended summer and started fall, with the exception of the Big Windstorm.

So now onto Winter. It seems like out of all the seasons everyone wants to know how cold or warm the Winter is going to be. Well I will get to that in just a moment...but first I thought I would tell you a few factors that meterologists, climatologists and forecasters look at when making Winter Forecasts. One of the main factors that many of you have heard of is El-nino and La-nino. El-nino is an abnormal warming of the tropical paciffic ocean waters. El-nino typically gives us a mild winter, depending on the strenght of El-nino. With La-Nino it is the opposite it is abnormal cooling of the tropical paciffic ocean waters, and it typically gives us a Cold and Stormy Winter. This year it looks like La-Nino will be the dominate weather factor for this winter. Currrently La-Nino is week, but there is a lot of other factors pointing to signs of an interesting winter...and here is what I am expecting.

I think we will see Below Average Temperatures...and Above Normal Precipitation. And for those of you who like snowfall,I expect that to be slightly above average as well with between 23-29 inches expected total for the whole season,Nov-Apr. I think the coldest months will be Late November through all of December, and we might see a little warm up at the beginning of January before Cold temps return again by the latter part of January into February, and possibly well into march. So I expect an early start to winter, and possibly a later end to the season as well. Also I think January and February will be our Snowiest months this season. Well there you have it. Don't shoot the messenger.

Here is what we should see for a Typical Winter Season. High temps range from 46-48 deg to start, and cool all the way down to 36-38 deg toward the middle of the season...and then rebound back up to 47-49 by the end of the season. Low temps range from 30-32 deg to start, and cool all the way down to 20-22 deg toward the middle of the season...and then rebound back up to 28-30 deg. Precipitation should average around 8.95 inches for the 3 month period. (Dec,Jan,Feb.) Typicall the coldest months and wettest months are Dec and Jan. Snowfall averages around 23.9 inches total for the whole season,Nov-April.

That is your Winter Weather Outlook for 2008-2009. Keep an eye on the sky and enjoy the wild world of weather. Take care. Doug.

P.S. Winter Officially begins on December 21st.(7:04am EST)

January Outlook,2009

Wow! 2008 sure was a year to remember. From the Widespread Record Severe Weather Outbreaks and Major Flooding, to the Big Windstorm...and more recent the unusual warmth for the end of December,we broke a record as we hit 70 deg. Also more severe weather broke out across Illinois,Missouri,Arkansas,Kansas and Kentucky. There was 4 tornado reports.

So what will the first month of 2009 bring...well I am expecting Below Normal Temperatures and Above Normal Precipitation...and this includes Snowfall as well. I think we will see between 7-11 inches for the month. I also think we will see some bitter cold outbreaks at times.

Here is what we should see for a Typical January. High temps range from 37-40 deg. Low temps range from 21-23 deg. Precipitation should average around 2.92 inches. Snowfall averages around 7.0in.

That is your Outllook for January 2009. Keep any eye on the sky and enjoy the wild world of weather. Take care. Doug.
